According to Ukrainian Prime Minister Yuriy Yekhanurov, who was on a working visit to Ashgabat on October 26-27, from now on "he will be responsible before my president for relations with such a strategically important country as Turkmenistan."
During his stay in the Turkmen capital, Yuriy Yekhanurov had two meetings with President Saparmurat Niyazov, representatives of ministries and establishments of Turkmenistan on the issue of payments for gas supplied to Ukraine and took part in celebrations dedicated to Independence Day of Turkmenistan.
As the Ashgabat correspondent of Turkmenistan.ru reports, during the first meeting of Saparmurat Niyazov and Yuriy Yekhanurov the sides discussed issues of further development of mutually beneficial cooperation between Turkmenistan and Ukraine, including on the issue of fulfillment by the Ukrainian side of its obligations on payment for Turkmen gas supplied in 2005.
In the course of the second meeting, the Ukrainian Prime Minister briefed the President of Turkmenistan on the results of bilateral consultations. He noted that the sides reached a clear understanding on further payments taking into account the maximum realization of mutual interests and the great potential of Turkmen-Ukrainian partnership.
As regards Turkmenistan, as its leader said, it is always open for constructive and equal cooperation and welcomes any steps aimed at achieving mutual understanding and working out a more efficient mechanism of partnership.
In his interview that Yuriy Yekhanurov gave in the Ashgabat airport before his departure for Kiev, he confirmed reaching a principal agreement on the core issue that was put on the agenda of bilateral talks.
"We have made an agreement. The main issue for us is to raise quality of mutual payments to the level that would correspond to our traditional cooperation," the Ukrainian Prime Minister stressed, noting that these efforts will become stronger, including in the trilateral format with participation of the Russian side whose representatives also were in Ashgabat these days.
"This is my first visit to Turkmenistan and I was struck by what I saw. As a constructor, walking along clean Turkmen streets, I could assess the scope and quality of construction work in Ashgabat. What is important is that you have strong hands, the president who set a clear task before him and strictly fulfills this task," Yuriy Yekhanurov said in particular.
